WINTER

Wind

Long ago when I was quiet, I used to listen to the wind

It would rustle through the tree and take my mind away

I would sing to the freedom it gave

I never had to worry where we’d go, and everyone I met there seemed to know

It was me

Love has come and love has gone, isolation settles in

And when I held you I would ask

Can’t you stay awhile?

She’d cling so very tight, and with the light became the wind

(So it ends; begins)                                                                                              12/5/83

No Wonder

Seems to me they’re saying how you’ll never cling

Burdened by your ever clever mind

Should they all be asking what I see in you

Perhaps I ought to say don’t waste your time

Is it any wonder I feel love at all?

Keeping all those angles well define

Holding in the laughter trying to explain

It’s more involved than pleading love is blind

So maybe all I’m asking is “hey be mine”

Careful not to miss those big blue eyes

And no one really questions I’m in love with you

It’s just a matter of knowing why                                                                        9/3/83

The Fall From Grace

I can see her swaying to the song on the stereo

In her eyes you see she very close to bitter tears

Winter comes and winter goes, but the chill remains in her heart

I was only trying to lend a hand and a little heat

No said I had to do it, it was my choice

In peace she teeters on the brink, never knowing what to say

In war she is the casualty that makes you stay

Now she softly crying to the child of her soul

Lamenting of her need to be free, again

Her children often wonder what they’ll do when I’m gone

I can only hold them and let them know it isn’t me

When they’re grown perhaps they’ll understand it isn’t me

I wrote so many songs for her, she listening to them now

Perhaps that’s all I was, a sad song on the stereo                                                10/12/83

Mirror

Time again, I see

You were running it seems for so long

But now you’re home again

Smiles for everyone, pleasant thoughts for the day

Well, oh, I’ve seen this face before

Oh, looking at me

You say such sweet things I can’t ever say

In your eye I see forgiveness for love that you don’t know

But, in the darkness it isn’t easy trying to believe that

Everything will find you someday

Like you finding me

Oh, love is easy, love is easy in a dream                                                            2/6/84

Trade

Soft as the rain, my my, how I feel it

Drawing me near, whisper sweetly I am here

Calling my eyes, how I need it

Ready, begin, here I go

Too many days I’ve seen rusted steel (would rather be)

The green of the trees filled with light

Running free on those cloudless days

Like a wondering child; life renewed

I planted my pain, gave it light, gave it water

Out by the sea made my trade

Came from the blue of the ocean, flowers for friends

To the end a smile and a song

Cooled by the breeze, warmed by the sun, shaded by trees

I never believed I could miss them

Through fluorescent light I hear them calling

So there I will go, for its pleasures I will stay                                                9/19/83

Crying

Crying, oh no, oh no, please don’t leave me crying

Oh no, oh no, please don’t leave me crying

Silent eyes, silent memory, distant thoughts keep calling

He was yours, young and cunning; do it all for me

So you do, so you love him as he fades from view, cry

Oh no, oh no, don’t leave me crying

Oh no, oh no, don’t you leave me crying

Love is stranger; love is red as you move together

Tried your best, strength and reason

But lonely hearts won’t rest, crying

Oh no, oh no, please don’t leave me crying

Oh no, oh no, please don’t leave me crying

Long past, best forgotten, rolling on the breeze

See it all, feel him tremble, share it all; no questions

Light heart, says he loves you, knowing he may be crying

Oh no, oh no, don’t you leave me crying

Oh no, oh no, don’t you leave me crying                                                            8/22/83

A to B

Towards the end it was just another story to tell

To the people who’d come and go

Paint a picture with several different colors

And try to make them see that it really changed

Who would notice at all, to be polite, it was just another story I had to tell

To all the people who never really knew me, who’d never really noticed the

Change in me

Life is simply a stretch of time, a simple method to pace the mind

From A to B

So you have to begin, slowly for the moment, building to the point

Where you feel it slide right into the morning light

It’s not a matter of where it really started, no, more the brutal fact

That it didn’t work

Childish feelings that love is something special and always very pretty

And never mean

I was in love with love more than in love with her

To see the problems that made it fail

Being truly naïve I would always believe it was surely the last of me

Life as always would move along, through the sorrows and through the songs

From A to B

So you have to begin, slowly for the moment, building to the point

Where you feel it slide right into the morning light

So what’s the moral, my friends, where is the message that saves

What is the meaning of what’s been said?

Where is the hope for all my silly dreams for the times when everything

Just falls apart

I feel so much in love, but is it something that real or just words I say

Trying simply to do the things you said you would do

And not be beaten by yesterday

Life and movement, they blend with time

Just like everything else you find

From A to B

So you have to begin, slowly for the moment, building to the point

Where you feel it slide right into the morning light                                    2/16/84

Talk To Me

Can it be with your wandering eyes that you look for me?

In places and ways that make it hard to detect what you’re feeling?

But somewhere inside, you, you act so afraid of the price that you pay

When I say, talk to me

I try to believe I know how you feel, it’s only pretend

I don’t know your sorrows, I don’t feel your pain, but I offer again

Deep in those soft sighs, how can I explain I need to believe

So please, talk to me

I know that you’re trying; I know that it’s hard

If you need to see me I have the time

Well. Smile again and tell me you’re fine, as I’m going

And I’ll splash your picture all over this page of my life

If you’re uneasy, if your heart starts to pound you may need to leave

But before you go, talk to me                                                                        2/17/84

A Screamer’s Farewell

So it comes again and the debt is paid

You bargained out your life and the brothers they stayed

Bobby’s lost and dying, for the color of the day

Now I have drawn the shades and killed my dreams

You are free my love, free, free, free

So go and live tomorrow and forget about me

Many hear my cries and many wear my smile

Even though I say farewell, you’ll see me for a while

In desperate souls with bloody eyes screaming for the peace

Some may think it mad if you miss me when I’m gone

Some hearts they never heal but you will move on

And remember that like my passing

The winter turns to spring                                                                                    2/28/84
